[sdiy] We are the Mummies (was: Freak at Home)

it's the question of purpose of music.

Is it experience or insight?

A good piece of music always delivers some insight.

Selling toilet paper to people is also a difficult
task. They must like it, or you will not sell anything.
There is huge advertising campaigns, TV spots, creating a brand
image and finally a lot of profit. Millions and millions.
Toilet paper has a lot of fans so to say.
But certainly I'd not say that it is very relevant...

The older I get, the more I nauseate because of these
tons of sh*t the pop industry pours out over us
every day. 9 out of 10 radio stations and 19 out
of 20 are filled with cant.

But I have gone too far now, this is completely
of topic, no issue for the list. I is the holy rule
of this list not to argue about music.
So I shut up here.

heh heh.. imho pop music is not irrelevant at all. it's all nice to make
music or compositions for a very select few with weird sounds. it's quite
another thing to shape it in such a way that 'the masses' will like it.
that's the real challenge. nothing is easier than sitting in an ivory tower
making academic music for an academic audience.
a great pop song will be part of popular culture. people will have bad or
happy memories from them.. it moves them. i think that's the greatest
achievement of all.. if you can make something that really moves somebody.

that's too easy. sure they could be heard, but so could the sound of the
electric guitar. a piano has been heard for hundreds of years. that doesn't
mean no one can do anything interesting anymore with it.
and childish, minimalistic music is a lot harder to make than you might
think..

i agree this must have been a very exciting time. but that doesn't mean
nothing good has been made afterwards..
