Tom,
Yes the Yamaha OPL's have a very close relative. What makes the difference
is how much individual control is available for use. The number of
operators varies from 2 to 4 which is two less than a DX.
Clever programming can make up for limitations in individual control of Key
Scaling, Feedback, and algorithm. My favorite incarnation of this
technology is the Yamaha YM2203C OPN Chip.

So, been following the recent FM thread on AH and its got me thinking about
something.
Do the FM chips used on the old Adlib PC Sound Cards ( pre-Soundblaster
in fact Pre-Gameblaster if anyone else remembers those ) have any relation
to the guts of a DX7 or kindred?
I know where a bunch of those chips are sitting, wondering if they are at
all worth playing with. As I remember, most PC games with Adlib cards had
some pretty hokey sounds, but I could easily be convinced that that was
from programming laziness vs poor quality availability.
