My $0.02 (USD) worth:

I for one would not want to work for anyone who
demanded a degree, even the exalted Robert Moog. I
have meet too many degreed engineers who were inept
designers with no common sense. A degree does not
guarantee anything, not even a basic knowledge. I'd
rather have someone with a good grasp of the
fundamentals and a big bookcase.
