This seems to be a rare thing...most places I have worked at seem to
emphasize that as an Engineer, I am replaceable....(there has been one
exception)...

I don't have that problem any longer...when I was aquired by the company
that purchased the product line I was working on, one of the things I lost was
all that vacation time (well, I only had 4 weeks, but that is still better than
2).
