If something isn't sending subcodes it's not following the Red Book
standard. In theory I can't see why anyone would want to build a player
like this, since unless it's some kind of chipset-specific 'feature' it's
going to be more effort to filter out subcodes than to leave them in.
However - I know some players have 'issues' with SCMS, which seem to be
subcode related. I think the idea is that if you filter out subcodes you
also disable any SCMS copy protection, and this makes CDs copyable where
they wouldn't be otherwise.
Of course if your burner doesn't care about SCMS this is just plain annoying.
I'd try another couple of DVD players just out of curiosity. So far as I
know subcodes should be there, but it's kind of an esoteric thing to be
testing for so it's possible that hundreds of models just don't bother, and
no one noticed before. I suspect DVD player -> Standalone burner is quite a
rare combination.
An alternative is to use a player with an optical out and buy a cheap
converter. Last time I looked they were around £30-£40 .
Or you could just go Mac or PC. I'd guess a cheap bay-sized DVD player is
going to be cheaper than a standalone unit. I've never had any problems
copying CDs from my Aopen DVD unit, subcodes and all.
