[sdiy] OT digital audio question

Hi,

I know it's off topic, but I'm certain there are many on the
list who can answer this right away, so I'm asking, and
I apologize for being off topic.

I want to replace my old CD player with a newer model.
Just a simple player with digital coax output to use it
as a source for copying my CDs to a stand alone CDR writer.

Now I found that there are practically *no* cheap CD players
with digital coax output anymore. No wonder, as for the
same price you can buy a DVD player ...

So I bought a DVD player with coax digital audio output.

But when I play CDs and want to record them on my Philips
CDR writer, no title markers are transmitted.

Question: Was this to be expected? Do DVD players send
digital audio without subcodes? (They also send a lot
of surround and Dolby stuff, so it's surely different, but
I had expected it to be downward compatible.)

I can return the DVD player on Monday, but before I do
this, I wanted to ask if this is a typical problem (i.e.
no need to test other DVD players).

Any experts here ?

Thanks,

JH.
