What works best for me, is poking a stainless steel dental pick thru the
molten solder & letting it set. The solder can't stick to the stainless 
steel, and then you take it out.
Also I use the pick to jiggle the leg around while desoldering.

One of the mailorder houseds (??Allelectronics?) has cheap dental pick sets.
