I've used something similar...
for an experiment I wanted to be able to do some calculation very quick.
so I use a programmable oscillator, normally it runs at 16Mhz (mega AVR max
speed) but when I want to do the maths I set a pin high on the AVR and make
it run at 32Mhz, then when I'm done, I drop it back to 16Mhz. A bit of a
cheat but dead handy to do :-)
