I built a pitch-to-MIDI-converter that works like this a while ago. It
doesn't have a display, but outputs MIDI note number (nearest note)
and pitch bend (how far from that note).
I intend to use it with my flute. However, for an optical tuning
control the pitch bend output is too fast, it's too hard to tell if
the note is sharp or flat since it jumps around too much. It shouldn't
be too difficult to slow this down (only for the display, not for MIDI
output). It would be nice if this device could double as a tuner too.
