[sdiy] solder wick?

Myself,
I havn't used solder wick in a long time.
I just use one of those syringe-like 'solder suckers' with a teflon tip.
Push the button and a spring loaded plunger sucks up the hot solder.
If I were to do alot of desoldering, I would spring a good desoldering station.
One thing I did some time back (in the pre-solderless-breadboard days) was attach one end of small diameter tubing (about a 1/2 inch diameter) to a Shop Vac, attach a teflon tip with a large opening to the other end. Switch on the vac and suck away!
It seemed to work fairly well if the tubing wasn't too long, and it sucks away the smoke too.

Does anybody use the "no-clean" type of solder wick?
What do you use to clean up the mess from normal solder wick?
Is a cheap desoldering station worth having, or is it pointless unless you
are willing to get a good one?
Basically I'd like to hear anything people have learned about desoldering
from experience.
