Right, an overloaded output xfmr is part of the "all controls on 11"
overdriven sound. For example, the Scholz Power Soak was designed so that
you could overload an amp's output stage, rather than just getting the usual
preamp distortion.
Driving the speakers hard is another source of distortion. (The Power Soak
was no help here, since it's purpose was to reduce the volume.) Try using a
small speaker that can tolerate being driven to the max. Like everything
else, your mileage will vary -- you may prefer a 2x12 or 4x12 cabinet driven
lightly.
Did someone already suggest www.amptone.com? Lots of low wattage amp info
there, including some kits.
