Hi Martin and John,

I would personally say that 10W is still too much for experiencing the
full output stage distortion without disturbing the neighbors.

I would go even a step smaller, using stuff like EF 86 or so, to make a
little push pull stage. Don't worry about the transformer too much,
guitar amps are notoriously "under ironed" in their output stage. You
don't want the full bass anyway, that sounds too "boomey" (and the bass
players domain :-)). The high end (>8kHz) is irrelavant too, since the
common 10 or 12 inch speakers do not reproduce this anyway, guitar sound
is a midrange thing IMO. So a relatively cheap "ELA" transformer should
do. Conrad has such a thing. Maybe even a power transformer. (They are
better than their reputation really.)

You can find lots of schematics online for guitar amps. For instance
here: http://tdsl.duncanamps.com/schematics.php

Cheers,
  René
