Hey Richard,
LUCKY YOU! Definitely a big DIY score! I still cruise garage sales almost
every weekend, hoping to find a score half as good as yours.
If you want something kind of funky and "lo-fi," the 4700 series will
definitely do the trick. IF however, you want controllable, repeatable
results I would try to clean and tune up the modules as much as possible,
sell the whole system on ebay, and use the money to buy newer stuff (PAIA
9000 series, Blacet, Cynthia, Doepfer, etc, etc, etc). The manuals still
might be available out there, and some people really like the
unpredictability and 'grunginess' of lo-fi equipment.
I guess a large part of being happy with a system like that is dependent on
your expectations. Don't expect the 4700 oscillators to stay in tune for
very long, or over much of a range. This doesn't mean the system isn't
useful, but just know what to expect.
Tim Servo
(whose first synth was a PAIA Gnome and is sitting in the garage waiting to
be used again) (the synth, not Tim)...
