First, I guess I should apologize. I didn't mean to
spark any sort of arguments culminating in people
pulling their mica caps from their boards...Mica caps
aren't aweful--I use them all of the time. I really
love the way sound in guitar effects and amps
(especially overdrives). But I think for something
like bypassing/coupling in synths you may as well go
with something cheaper and smaller which in the end
may last longer.

Mica has a hydroxyl component in one of the apical
octahedral sites. When you heat it this drives out
the OH which results in water loss. But you have to
REALLY heat mica to see it happen. Also I really
don't know how this reacts with PTFE. But once
dewatered it's nearing impossible to force this water
back into the lattice.
...seems like I change out one or two mica caps in my
fender tonemaster once every other tube change. But I
also run my amp really hot with Philips 7581As most of
the time.
