You have to leave the original choke (deflection coils) electrically
connected. Resistors will not work since the high voltage is derived from
the horizontal flyback pulses caused by inductance.

Place another identical choke over tube neck. Insulate original choke from
chassis.

Bear in mind very high voltages inside a TV set which can be lethal.
