What about using doubled CC messages for 14bit control - it's even part of the MIDI standard if you use certain pairs (0-31 paired with 32-63).

Or is speed of data transmission also a problem?  (Takes about 2ms to send a 14bit CC message which would give you pretty poor sample rate if you were trying to send a fast LFO or something like that)
