I've heared that some guitarists don't use matched pairs of output tubes (and
not using the bias pots in the amps either) in their amps to get a better sound.
In the old days of tube amps one tried to make k2 and k4 small, to obtain
a low overall THD. Not necessarily do that to get a pleasant sound. There was
little you could do about symmetrical clipping, except keeping the amplitudes down.
(negative feedback came later.) Also this means that you obtain maximum power.
At least thats the impression I have after reading some old sources like Ratheiser
"Rundfunkröhren - Eigenschaften und Anwendungen".
