(although the author does state that there might be mistakes in the diagram)
I've also designed and built something myself which accepts MIDI note-on/note-off and has 8 gate outputs, and 16 trigger outputs (I use it for triggering audio gates, drum machines, etc..) My design is based on the now obsolete 6402 UART - if you are interested I can send you the circuit diagram / PCB layout, and I have a couple of 6402's (I could sell you one if you like).
