Theo,

Most equipment that uses -48 volts is telco equipment. Most PTSOs (public
telephone switching office) are battery powered. Imagine a room with 24 lead
acid cells, each the size of a large aquarium. Not too useful elsewhere.

Cellular base stations are often battery powered as well but at +24 volts.
