I really had problems making good pcb's at home.
Now I do very fine pcb's on the first try.. For me the trick was to spend a
lot of money into a good uv-exposure machine, and I don't use self-printed
films anymore.
Any little offset print-shop can create perfect films, and those are 100%
black. Without pits and breaks in the traces. They are not as cheap as a
photocopy, but the price is ok. For the pcb material I take everything.. I
haven't experienced any big differences in quality yet.
