As with all things, there are tricks to drilling
steel. Trick #1: you must use cutting oil. Official
Cutting Oil is best, but hey, any oil will work:
WD-40, 3-in-1, anything. Trick #2: Don't go too fast.
If the surface speed of the face of the drill is too
fast, heat will build up real fast and chew up the
bit. The bigger the drill, the lower the RPMs. Trick
#3: use good bits. Most hardware store bits are iffy
for steel. Best bet is to invest in a good set of bits
from McMaster-Carr etc, and then treat them well.

Or else switch to aluminum!
