Gentlemen and lady (hello to Cynthia),
I need to open by saying Mark Verbos is the most helpful and patient guy in
Europe. I owe him my liver.
Secondly, I've built now three low pass gates which closely resemble those
of THE modern day underworld God of instrument design himself, who's name
rhymes with 'Mooklah".
Once I got the first one ironed out,(which had about a billion errors in it,
including some really really stupid component subs on my part), the rest
were a blink.
About a second after I got them up I did a taste test against a standard,
non-vactrol based VCA. The verdict: the Low Pass Gate is the sweetest
sounding amplitude modifier ever conceived. It's been 22 years since I've
snuggled up to these things. I had forgotten. There is no comparison for
short envelopes.
I suggest you all give it a try. Build an LPG, buy a Borg filter and get
with it the best-sounding multimode filter to hit the pyke in a decade (my
opinion), or wait until the mystery mods start showing up by Mr. Mooklah
himself - but get your hands on one of these things.
If you're as dangerous with a soldering iron in your hand like I am, you
might consider replacing the 7.5 supply/SPDT switch/ 4016 analog switch
combo Mark suggests with a singular TPDT switch. Saves you from worrying
about the regulated supply and the wiring of the CMOS part altogether. I
did this on the last 2 and it was in fact a lot easier. Another warning -
there are some unexpected twists and turns in Mr. Mook's schematic layouts.
The op amp ins are reversed from where you would expect them to be. Go by
the pin-outs, you be good.
Get an LPG, you be REAL good.
