yeah, I suspected as much,

I tried a 5.1v zener in the circuit and I got noise, but at a much lower 
volume than the osc's with the noise trimpot all the way up.

I also tried a 6.2v zener which gave me noise but in bursts of about 1Hz (it 
wasn;t the lfo modding the filter, I checked)

I also used that 3904 as a diode trick, but that was even softer. 

I have some 9v zeners and some rectifier diodes (4001 and ilk) but I haven't 
had the guts to plop them in yet.

once I get some ionfo on the noise gain stages I'll probably just use a stock 
zener and raise the gain.
