The advantage of the helipot resistance element is that it can provide a high
(1-100K) resistance value and robust construction. This resistance element is
more than just a resistance wire. It is a thin resistance wire tighty wound
around another larger diameter insulated support wire. The resistance element
length of a small helipot is about right for a ribbon controller.

Helipots are very cheap and readily available on ebay.
