You're perfectly right.
When we talk about a keyboard, trigger is generater at each keystroke,
and gate is held at active level (usually 5-15V) as long key is pressed.
So when you play legato, you get one long gate and multiple triggers.
Trigger is a short pulse in range of miliseconds.
