If they were the metal can types... they would be Allen Bradley type J...
a 1.25" diameter industrial model.

The black plastic ones with the lead config you mention were the Allen
Bradley
"Mod Pots"... a line that had interchangable elements and could be had in up
to
4-gang configurations. These were the highest quality (and price) units.
They are about  5/8" square.
