Hi,
Errr... no, that would be a crap response. Better to say nothing at all than
that. Company reps are always going to try and chase these things up. For
all he knows, you might want to buy hundreds of thousands of these things.
They will always hassle you in this way begging for potential custom and
they're pretty thick skinned, so don't be afraid to fob him off with some
bullsh*t. Tell him thankyou for the samples, we have evaluated them, but the
project has been shelved... or something. Yep, lie. He's a company rep just
doing his job. He doesn't care either.
Reps will always want to introduce themselves over the phone. Only that way
can they put you on the spot and get some quick answers out of you, beg to
come over for a meeting and show you some more products.
If I need a part in small quantities at work, I find it far easier to pick
up a catalogue and just PAY for the damned thing. It's far less hassle than
constant phone calls from representatives. Surely you can afford to pay for
five 4000 series CMOS logic ICs?! What are we looking at... between one and
two pounds / dollars?
Getting freebies isn't gonna harm a company at all, but since there's
probably going to be a limit on how much you can get from tehm before they
suss you, I'd obtain components this way only if the part is particuarly
expensive or difficult / impossible to obtain in small quantities. Just my
personal opinion.
