I thought of this too, MIDI -> PWM seems cleaner. But if a PAIA 9700
is going to be used which has an 8051 uC and a DAC08, adding some
555's to the CV outputs seems like less effort than adding a port and
writing the PWM code. Of course I prefer doing things in hardware, I'm
sure a software guy would prefer the code method.
