Neon is cool, temperature too . Run neon on DC and it won't hum. Only one
electrode inside the lamp will glow. But then, you will need a high voltage
power supply. Too much work.

The new synthesizer that I am building has several neon based modules. I
like blinky lights.

My recommendation is a bunch of LEDs, around the perimeter, lighting the
edge of the plastic. You probably can connect five or six LEDs in series to
get the efficiency up.
