What happens is, distributors are initially very seductive. They talk
gloriously about how they are going to promote your product and make you
huge!

What they mean is, they will list your product on their site, but they
expect the manufacturer to pay for all actual advertising, now with THEIR
business name on it. Essentially, you end up paying a lot of money to build
THEIR business, they do not help you build YOUR business (surprise!).

So you end up paying them 40% for just writing down a credit card number. It
can be a fatal waste of time and money for a small manufacturer.
Distributors are useful to manufacturers who have such an desperate excess
of inventory, they are willing to pay someone to help shovel it out the
door.

Don't get me wrong, I am not saying anything negative about any individual
or business. This is simply the reality of the business situation, and
business is not pretty or nice.
