In addition to all the replies/info re FM:  as you said, the MODULATION on 
the 460 is the depth of how much one oscillator affects the other.  The 
SPECTRUM parameter tunes the modulating osc. thus altering the timbre created 
by FM.

[My 1st exposure to FM also (once upon a time, long ago).  No DX 7, but some 
4-op stuff like the TX81z.]
