Dear Harry,
    Thanks!  The DX-7 reference was a helpful clue.  Consequently I found this DX-7
site and learned a lot:

is my accidental introduction the the wonders of FM synthesis.  I'm hooked!  Now to
feed my MS20 some high frequency sine waves. . . .
