When in high school I used plywood for housings for the same reason as you
(available for free) and never had a problem with it.
As for the "painting process" that would be about the same for all front
panel materials, namely no painting...
Just print out your front panel layout on colored paper and stick it to your
front panel, then spray with varnish.
This can give you very nice panels and because of the varnish it won't look
like paper any more :)
