Well, I have only one data point, so that does not constitute a line,
however, the one article I had published did not transfer copyright to the
magazine. I retained copyright of  the article and received the impression
that that was standard procedure.  The magazine only asked for first
publishing rights and even that had a limited duration.

This, otoh, is completely different. In most cases the rights to
intellectual property such as manuals belong to the company that developed
them, even if contracted.
