I'd run the filter at the edge of self resonance... then hit the input with
a transient ... like a trigger pulse... or a differentiated sq. wave.

The trick with a square wave is to get the trigger only on one edge...
OTOH if its 50% duty you can trigger on both edges.

I think this gives the sound of a raindrop in a barrel myself... I do like
the sound.
