These do in fact control a bank of simple filters, giving different tones.
Probably a set of three band pass filters, and a high pass filter.
As I've already mentioned, I spliced a servo motor into the thing to get the
fan running. I also managed to partly reseal the sound cabinets around the
reeds.
The Hohnerola does sound rather like an accordion in tone (no surprise
here), though now that I have it to this stage, its future as a Hohnerola
looks bleak. The sound isn't bad, and could be fun to use in various music
making, but unfortunately the reed box is stuffed. Several reeds do not
sound. A few give out a horrible discord, and some are out of tune.
Corrosion seems to have messed up the contact where the reeds are rivited to
the bases, and to their pickup wires. The worse the conduction, the more
interference these reeds (or the long "antenna wire" to the key switches)
pick up, resulting in the corresponding key producing a sound like all keys
being held down at once. A little rust on a high frequency reed is enough to
permanently change its tuning - after all a little of the metal of that reed
has been lost. As getting the corrosion out would require complete
disassembly of the affected reeds, and half the reedbox to get to them (they
are glued and rivited in), the task becomes near impossible. These reeds are
vibrating in cutouts with maybe a couple thousandths of inches clearance at
best. It is beyond a d.i.y.er to fix.
I guess I've just got me a console for a tube synth.
