Good point -- that would make more sense. I haven't opened it up in years,
but I distinctly remember an electric motor that changed speed.
Afaik, the voltage representing the input signal is placed on the drum by
the "record" wiper, then discharged and converted to the output signal by
the "playback" wiper. What I don't understand is why doesn't the can
conduct making the electrostatic charge equal all over. Any ideas??

The oil in there now might contain toxic PCB's, so I'm not going to open it
up to add more oil unless it's absolutely necessary. Then again, I
haven't used it in while.
