My dad worked for the state highway dept and would bring home old signs and
stuff they screwed up in the sign shop.
But that was 30-40 years ago too.
You might check with the local, county, state street crews. They might even
have their own sign shops which might be worth checking. It used to be that
all the signs were painted. They would take a white base, put pigment in and
then add these reflective beads. Today I think a lot are printed on some
sort of refective film with an adheasive back. I've seen some local street
signs that look like they have stick on letters to.
