[sdiy] super tone control

hi
i am in the process of building Craig Anderton's super tone control. it is 
the first project i've done strictly from a schematic and i am having a 
couple of difficulties. i'm hoping someone is familiar with the circuit or 
has schematics, or can just give me general schematic reading advice.
first, i can't tell which ends of j1 and j2 to connect the in/out jacks to. 
one end of j2 obviously connects to ground, so that seems straightforward. 
j1 i can't figure out.
second, the project calls for a bipolar power supply. it gives instructions 
for connection to 2 9v batteries. if i want to hook it to an adapter, what 
specs should i use? do i need one that outputs 9vAC?
