I have become quite expert lately at cleaning pots by carefully opening and
using isopropyl and cotton buds to clear the track of gunk. Have found this
very effective when you can't get hold of the right replacement or, as in
the case of my cheapo Fostex faders, ALPS no longer makes them. It totally
revitalised them. Give the wiper a clean and a slight 'bend for luck' while
you're about it.
Can't help with the Kawai but have to sympathise with that sinking feeling
you get when a hotwiring attempt turns into a blown up mess. Just as bad
when you then have to think up a story to tell the tech dept at Kawai to get
a spare/help!
I also have a simple 1496 ring mod schem for someone who asked.
