[sdiy] Cutting EL Backlight Strips?

I have an LCD display in need of a new EL backlight. I also have another LCD
which has a working EL backlight, of a larger size. I think I've read somewhere
of people cutting EL backlights into smaller sizes. Is the practical? Will it
either ruin, or shorten the life of the backlight? These strips are sealed in
plastic. Would the raw edge, of a strip that's been cut, let oxygen into the
strip and somehow ruin it? Should I seal the cut edge with something? If so,
what should I use?
