    I am fairly sure the L series parts are functionally equivelent.
However, double check the pinouts to make sure they are the same.  It has
been a long time since I have seen L series stuff (25 years), and it seems
like if I remember correctly, TI was not very careful about keeping this
series 100% pin compatable.  The voltage thresholds will be the same.  The
main difference will be speed.  The L series was extremely slow....but
consumed a lot less power.  If you are really up for experimentation, you
might want to try a 74HC93 (if such a thing exists).  The only thing you
would have to be mindfull of is that the HC parts have a different input
threshold.
