not exactly cheap, though.
But quite a lot of tubes allow for operation with say 20-30V.
The gain will be low, and you don't have the same dynamics as
with higher voltages. But I doubt that the ECC86 will be any better
at 6-12V, it was intended as a hf-tube for car-radios, back when
transistors had transit frequencies of 100kHz's.
