The major benefits for these sockets ate that they do not consume any PCB
space (normally you must cross over the power traces beneath the IC)... and
they are located in the perfect location for minimum inductance on a PTH through
hole board.
And are about five times the cost of a socket alone... don't work as well as SMT
capacitors, or a multilayer board. So in a way they are kind of obsolete now...
(they never really caught on in the first place...)
BTW: those who use the screw machine sockets that rely on precious metals for
contact life are complaining they fall out of the sockets. They should try AMP
(Tyco) Diplomate sockets with the dual contact design, in tin-lead finish. The IC
leads are tin lead anyway... and the sockets have excellent retention force and
keep the contact clean by being gas tight (like wire wrap) because of contact
pressure.
I've never had one fall out (I build industrial controls....)
They make a series with a retention leg that has a kink in it... snaps into the PCB
holes and does not fall out when you turn the board over for solder. I use them for
prototypes as well.
My $.04 (my opinion twice...)
