It's easy to build an optical S/PDIF input or output into a device that
already has a cinch one. Just trace the circuit to the point where the
signal is TTL level. At the cinch jack the signal is lower level,
usually there's a little transformer in between. At the TTL point a TOTX
(transmitter) rsp. TORX (receiver) can be connected directly. For an
input, a switch can be added to toggle between electrical and optical
input. Outputs can operate both at the same time. I've done this with my
CD player, it was easy and works well.
