I think you can extend it to 20, but on the other hand, if you do not
pay the maintainance fees, you may loose it earlier! That is however
just from the top of my head.

One thing to check is the costs:

One should also check out the European and National rules if you want
to be picky.

Patents can be hairpulling if you need to apply for them or have to
deal with them in the buissness world. More importantly, for a DIYer
they can be a very rewarding source of information, especially now
with modern search engines and all that.
