I got belted by one leg of 480V-3 phase... I was servicing an air
conditioning roof-top unit in the rain. A nice 1-1/2" or 2" spark jumped
out and hit the metal side panel as I was removing it. Threw me about 5
feet, and I landed on my back about 2 feet from the roof edge. My arm was
numb and tingling for hours.

I was only changing air filters and diagnosing a thermostat wiring problem
(24VAC), so I figured there was no reason to shut the power off. Last time
I used *THAT* theory. Lucky I'm not dead (from the shock or the potential
fall). Respect your mains power.
