For what I know Paula is a semi stand alone MOD player chip, it needs the
processor but does a lot on its own.
There is loads of info about programming Paula in various Amiga handbooks.
Some handbooks get quite deep into how the hardware works too, especially
when this is related to the interrupt handlers like in Paula's case.
To see how to hook Paula up you might check the Amica circuit diagrams.
Its used as 68000 periphery so probably the timing is compatible with 68000.
If memory serves the 8520 is a cmos 6520, a parallel interface (PIA)
