[sdiy] looking for a diy synth useful for lead sounds

I have two FatMan synths and I have used them for leads
(melodic), but quite honestly, I think of the stock FatMan
as more of a bass synth. IMHO the main reason for this
is just that the synth is in a standard, but simple
configuration. 2 VCOs, 2 EGs and 1 VCF. For more interesting
and odd sounds, I'd think a noise source is necessary as well as
LFOs and modulation inputs for everything. A ring modulator
and a waveshaper would be good. The FatMan can be modified to
support all this, but that would increase the total cost of the
project. BTW, the FatMan is not polyphonic. It would be
beneficial to think about the kinds of sounds you like and
price a modular kit (there are several) that can produce them.
A modular is also good from a 'go slow' perspective. You can
start making music with a small number of modules and build
more as you can afford them.
