Also, a couple of companies make really nice and cheap thermal label
printers.

I use the Brother PT-310 which I bought from Costco for about $40 - the
label tapes are about $15 each.  I have not used these for panels but if you
made your panel a uniform white color ( or special-ordered colored tapes ),
the label would blend in quite nicely.  The adhesive is pretty good.  I have
used them for labeling my mixer and jack panels - nice and clear and crisp.
